Unity College was established in Canberra, Australia, in 1995 and has its foundations in grass roots ministry training for local churches. The name Unity College was chosen to reflect the unity between the churches in Canberra to pool their resources and provide training previously only afforded by larger churches in the capital cities. In 1998 the college obtained its Registered Training Organisation (RTO) status and began delivering government accredited training with a particular emphasis on Christian ministry and creative arts. Since then the college has taken up a national focus to provide training in other centres around the country through partnerships.
From 2004 onwards, locations in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania have undertaken teaching across an expanded range of courses. In recent years opportunities to also provide training internationally have emerged. The college has also recognized the need to train in the general community with a Christian worldview and has added a substantial number of courses with more general vocational outcomes to its scope of registration in recent years.
The Canberra Campus serves a dual role of administering the operation of Unity College Australia nationally as well as providing the hub for Canberra training activities. The Campus moved to a new venue in July 2012, and is now located in the Belconnen Town Centre, in the north of Canberra. The venue is situated in the middle of the Belconnen Bus Interchange, adjacent to the Westfield Shopping Centre, and is easily accessed by public transport. The Belconnen venue includes training rooms, staff offices, music studios, a library, student common and study areas and an auditorium on 2 levels of the Belconnen Churches Centre. This new venue provides the college with increased training space as well as specialised facilities for music and creative arts.
